Chinese Herbal Medicine

Dr. J.H. Shade offers stand-alone custom Chinese herbal consultations at Two Crows. Custom herbal formulas may take the form of granules (herbal powders), tinctures, or bulk dried herbs. Cassidy was born and raised in Oregon and is a member of the Cow Creek Umpqua Tribe. She and Shade often travel to Southern Oregon to participate in Tribal cultural events, and Cassidy serves on both her Tribe’s Cannabis Commission and Health Advisory Committee. She is a graduate of Reed College and Stanford Law School. Cassidy was an attorney in the Portland area for many years before enrolling in the National University of Natural Medicine, where she is currently in a doctoral program studying acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas.

Cassidy has been training in Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy since 2024 and continues to study the modality through intensive annual trainings with Todd Jackson’s school in Portland. As a student of meditation and yoga for many years, Cassidy was drawn to craniosacral therapy’s essential values of deep listening and cultivating subtle awareness. She has personally experienced more nervous system regulation and greater overall calm from receiving regular treatments herself and loves to share craniosacral therapy’s profound restorative ability with patients.

Cassidy brings her diverse variety of life experiences to the treatment room. She understands firsthand the toll that chronic stress and tension can take on the body and mind and is especially interested in supporting patients navigating stress-related conditions and life transitions.

Dr. Shade became an Acupuncturist because of a lifelong search to understand how the disparate parts of a human being are connected. After many years and thousands of miles of travel, Dr. Shade settled in Portland. In seeking to become an Acupuncturist and an Herbalist, he graduated from NUNM in 2015 with a Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine, and from the Won Institute in 2025 with a Doctorate in Acupuncture. Prior to enrolling at NUNM, he completed his undergraduate degree in classical Chinese literature from Portland State University, gaining firsthand knowledge of the basic tenets of Chinese Medicine. He has found that a clear understanding of these works can provide a holistic map of the relationships between the different organs of the body and the mind, allowing emotional and mental suffering as well as chronic disease to be treated as efficiently and effectively as physical injuries or common illnesses.

He believes that disease and suffering may only be diagnosed by looking at a person in the context of the life and the world that person occupies, and therefore every person must be treated as a unique individual with their own specific set of circumstances. Each treatment is founded on the idea of bringing that person back into balance with themselves, not some idealized normal. In addition to nutritional and herbal consultations, he incorporates a spectrum of techniques, both ancient and modern, in order to address the multiple layers of the emotional and physical person during treatment.

Dr. Shade believes the experience of feeling whole and healthy is the pinnacle of the human experience, and being able to support others in their quest is his passion.
